CCTV or Closed Circuit Television security systems have been around for years, and have become increasingly popular as a surveillance method in shops, pubs and more recently homes. As technology has developed over the years CCTV systems have become much more efficient and user friendly.

The basics of a CCTV security system involve a camera, wires to connect your camera to a monitor (unless you are using wireless surveillance cameras), a monitor and if you wish to record the images then some form of recording equipment. The images that are transmitted are only available for you to view, hence the name closed circuit. If you wish to have more than one monitor viewing the images then this will need to be connected directly to the system as well.

The number of cameras that you need will depend on the area that you want to cover with CCTV and the shape of the area. You may need an additional camera just to cover an awkward corner. Of course the more cameras you have the more images you will be getting, but there is no point in having excessive amounts of CCTV security cameras just for the sake of it. It is worth getting some advice from a security company as to how many cameras you need and where they are best positioned to get optimum coverage. You can find plenty of professional surveillance companies on the internet who will be able to offer you help and advice on the best type of system for you.

Once you have you cameras in place and hooked up to your monitors then you are good to go. Depending on how many cameras you have you will be able to either view all the images being transmitted at once in a collage on the screen or you can have a system where you can switch between cameras and have a full screen image. It is worth bearing in mind that images from a colour camera are going to be much clearer, and can make people much easier to identify. However, for the purposes of a camera that is going to be recording at night, then black and white gives a much clearer picture quality. It may be that you decide to have colour cameras for the day and black and white cameras for night time surveillance. You will also need to have a sign up somewhere on your premises informing people that there is a CCTV security system in place.

Once you have decided to install a CCTV security system, it should be a fairly quick and easy process and you will be able to monitor every corner of your property with ease.
