Mooncup - the Reusable Menstrual Cup
70
The Mooncup is a silicone menstrual cup which is designed to be used instead of tampons or sanitary towels. Offering an alternative to traditional sanitary protection, the Mooncup is eco-friendly, hypoallergenic and incredibly cost effective.
Made from soft medical grade silicone, which has many benefits - it is latex-free and it is also hypoallergenic, and can be used by women with sensitive skin as it contains no dyes. Unlike tampons it will not absorb any of your natural moisture, and menstrual cups have never been linked to toxic shock syndrome which is a potentially fatal syndrome.
A Mooncup lasts for years, and you will find that the cost of one Mooncup will be equal to that of around three months of traditional sanitary protection such as tampons of sanitary towels. They can be used for any flow level, and can be very handy if you need to keep a record of your menstrual flow for your gynecologist or doctor as they have measurement lines. Unlike tampons, the Mooncup doesn't absorb your menstrual flow, instead it collects it which means you have none of the dryness that is often associated with tampons, especially if they are used towards the end of your menstrual flow.
Once the Mooncup is inserted it forms a seal with your vaginal walls, this ensures your menstrual flow is collected in the cup with no leakage. This seal is broken when you wish to remove your Mooncup and it can then be emptied and re-inserted. You can re-use your Mooncup over and over again, and it can be left in for 4-8 hours in between. With the ability to hold more than three times the fluid that a super absorbent tampon can, the Mooncup can handle even the heaviest days of your menstrual flow. Mooncups come in two different sizes, Size A is desiged for women under 30 that have had children naturally, or women over 30 and Size B is designed for women under 30 that have not had children or have had them via cesarean section.
Thanks to the seal that is created when the Moon cup is inserted, it can be worn for all sports, including swimming with no risk of leaking. It can also be safely worn overnight, with no possibility of leakage, no matter what position you choose to sleep in.
Actually using a Mooncup is a lot easier than you would think, and it is actually very clean and easy to use. Once you have inserted your Mooncup for the first time you will get an idea of where it will sit comfortably and just how easy it is to insert and remove. The key to using a Mooncup is to relax, as tensing up will only make your vaginal walls tense up and make the Mooncup almost impossible to insert. The same applies when removing it, just relax, break the seal and remove slowly. It takes a couple of goes to get used to it, but once you have the hang of it you will wonder why you didn't buy one sooner, and will never turn back to sanitary towels or tampons again. A Mooncup is a brilliant investment and can change the way you view your period forever.
