Identifying Sinus Infection Symptoms

Sinus infection, or sinusistis as it is also known is a painful and actually quite serious condition that occurs when bacteria manage to get through the sinus' defences and lodge themselves on the sinus walls.  The most common causes of sinus infection are things such as viral infections or allergens (e.g. pollen). Viral infections damage the sinus lining which leads to inflammation. This in turn results in fluid thickening the lining which causes an obstruction in the nasal passage. This means the process that would normally eliminate bacteria is disrupted leaving the bacteria to multiply, this in turn products sinus infection symptoms.

Depending on the severity of the infection, the symptoms vary in their intensity.  Symptoms of sinus infection should not be ignored, as left untreated sinus infections can, in the worst case scenario prove fatal.

It is most common for sinus infections to follow a cold. It is normal to feel bunged up and have a stuffy nose with a cold. However if you are still feeling heavily congested after a week, and have pain around your eyes, possibly localised in the inner corner, and running down one side of the  nose and cheekbone area along with yellowy-green mucus then you should see your doctor as this could well be the onset of a sinus infection, you may also find that you have a headache or localised pain in one or both of your temples. In severe cases sinus infections can lead to swelling of the face around the eyes and nasal area.  Suffering from a persistant cough during the day, earache and even toothache are all also indications of a possible sinus infection.

Your doctor will be able to determine whether you are suffering from a sinus infection or just a heavy cold, however if you are told it is a cold but your symptoms persist for a few days more, go back. The most common form of treatment for sinus infections is antibiotics. These should clear up the infection within a week or so and the symptoms should subside.  Never ignore what you think may be sinus infection symptoms, there is no harm in going to your doctor if you feel you may be suffering as catching these things early means much better chances of a full and quick recovery.
